Dr. Isabel Rivero-Vilá is a Senior Professorial Lecturer at American University and an independent filmmaker.
She has been an Associate Professor at Carthage College for 18 years where she has taught Spanish, French, Francophone cinema and African studies. She has also been a professor at the Universidad Pontificia de Salamanca (Spain) and the University of Wisconsin-Parkside.
In order to fully integrate Francophone cultures through film and multimedia in her classes, she became a filmmaker and studied documentary filmmaking at Chicago Filmmakers School and she holds a master’s in Creative Documentary Filmmaking from the Instituto del Cine de Madrid.
In 2016, Isabel Rivero-Vilá produced the webdoc series “5 mois à Nantes, ville vivante” which is used by French teachers in many countries. Since 2019, she has filmed several short films in Senegal (Un dimanche à Gorée) and video-interviews with artists, politicians, musicians, and educators in Senegal. Her interview with director Moussa Sène Absa was broadcast by Senegalese television's Jotna TV.
Last Spring 2021, she filmed her first feature documentary in Senegal. Her documentary film "AFRYKAS et la boîte magique" has been awarded and nominated best documentary and is part of the official selection of several film festivals (The African Film Festival, The International Black and Diversity Film Festival, The International Brightlight Film Festival and the Argenteuil International Film Festival among others)
Isabel Rivero-Vilá regularly collaborates with award-winning Senegalese filmmakers and teaches documentary film seminars in Senegal. She also collaborates with the French Embassy in Washington D.C organizing the Festival de la Francophonie and the film screenings, she invites guest speakers and moderates the round table discussions.
