Is financial aid available for summer sessions?

Below is information regarding summer aid for both undergraduate and graduate students.

Undergraduate Students Enrolled in 4 year Programs

A limited amount of Institutional need-based aid is available for the summer sessions. To apply for institutional and federal grant consideration and/or federal loans be sure to file a 2023-2024 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). In addition, please complete the following steps:

  1. File a AU Summer Aid Application, available April 1.
  2. Submit any additional documents listed on the portal under the "Financial Aid: My Documents" Web page. 
  3. Enroll on at least half-time basis. Half time during the summer session is defined as 6 credits for undergraduate enrollment.
  4. Confirm with your academic advisor that your anticipated graduation date is accurate. Summer aid will not be awarded to students who are listed as having completed their program as of the end of the spring 2023 semester.
  5. If your are planning to use a Parent PLUS loan, be sure to have your parent submit the loan application online.

Award letters will be available beginning in April. Federal financial aid awards will show as pending financial aid on your portal billing statement. These will remain as pending financial aid until you are enrolled at least half time, your courses have begun, and your 2022-2023 grades have been recorded and reviewed to ensure that you are meeting Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP). Once spring semester grades are available at the end of May, your SAP status will be reviewed. If you are failing SAP at that time, your aid for the summer will be canceled.

Graduate Students

You do not need to complete the summer aid application. In order to receive aid for summer, you must meet the following requirements:

  1. Complete the 2023-2024 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
  2. Complete any additional documents listed on the portal under the "Financial Aid: My Documents" web page.
  3. Enroll on at least a half-time basis to be eligible for federal student loans. Half time during the summer session is defined as 2 credits for graduate enrollment. Half time is defined as 3 credits for graduate enrollment in the online Kogod programs for the July 2023 Term.
  4. Confirm with your academic advisor that your anticipated graduation date is accurate. Summer aid will not be awarded to students who are listed as having completed their program as of the end of the spring 2023 semester.
  5. If your are planning to use a Graduate PLUS Loan, be sure to submit the application online.

2023 AU Summer Aid Application

Undergraduate students enrolled in a 4-year program, can complete the summer aid application as part of the process to apply for federal aid for the summer. Graduate Students do not need to complete this form.
