Welcome to CCES

The Center for Community Engagement and Service (CCES) is AU’s hub for community outreach, volunteering and service-learning opportunities in Washington, DC and beyond. Being part of the DC community is an important part of the student experience at AU, and CCES is where students come to connect.

You can tutor DC students with DC Reads. Earn class credit with volunteer work through the Community Service-Learning Program (CSLP). Participate in or lead a domestic or global service experience through the Alternative Breaks Program. You can even turn your passion into a project with an Eagle Endowment.

MLK Day of Service 2023

CCES will be hosting our annual MLK Day of Service 2023 on January 16th. Students will be organized into groups to head out and do service in the DC area. We will kick-off with breakfast and registration at 9am in Butler Boardroom. Following breakfast there will be an activity followed by service at one of our various community partner sites!

4th Annual MLK Visionary Award

This award seeks to honor an outstanding member of American University's alumni community that is currently working in the nonprofit sector or in education in the DMV area. The winner of the MLK Visionary Award 2023 is Keesha Ceran of Teaching for Change, learn more about Keesha on our awards page! She will receive $750 to go towards Teaching for Change at the Kay Spiritual Life Center's Civil Rights Memorial on Feburary 1, 2023
